“Mexican-American Goth”

Quince which translates to “fifteen” in English, is the age in Latinx culture, when a young girl transitions to womanhood. Today, Quinceañeras are a form of celebration, generally filled with dancing, food, and the birthday girl in a beautiful dress.

In the past however, things were somewhat different. With most Quinces, once a girl turned fifteen, they were often married off to live the life of a housewife.

The pictures depict “coming of age”, male dominance in Latinx marriages, and the longing for one’s own identity.
